Abstract:

Many findings point to the presence of a close relationship between the immune, endocrine and neurologic systems. For example the suppressive effects of β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-HCG) on IL-l production, the potentiative effect of enkephalins on lymphocyte functions and the suppressive effect of leuteinizing hormone (LH) on natural killer (NK) cell activities have been clearly established. In this regard we have studied the effects of β-HCG on neutrophil function in vitro. This study was performed on 28 peripheral blood neutrophil samples (14 as test and 14 as control), by incubating neutrophil preparations with bacteria in the presence or absence of the hormone for one hour at 37°C. The results indicated that with 20 IU/mL of hormone, the total and intracellular bactericidal activities of neutrophils were• significantly increased (p<0.05), but the phagocytic activity remained unchanged.

Chemical Synthesis of the β-Subunit of Human Luteinizing (hLH) and Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) Glycoprotein Hormones

Human luteinizing hormone (hLH) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) are human glycoprotein hormones each consisting of two subunits, an identical α-subunit and a unique β-subunit, that form noncovalent heterodimers. Structurally, β-hCG shares a high degree of sequence similarity with β-hLH, including a common N-glycosylation site at the N-terminus but differs mainly in the presence of an ext...

SDS-PAGE Electrophoretic Property of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) and its β-subunit

The microheterogeneity property of hCG with regards to its sialic acid contents resulted in variable mobility of the glycoprotein in SDS-PAGE. The intact hCG molecule is composed of two dissimilar subunits, namely alpha- and beta-subunits. The identification of hCG bands in SDS-PAGE was accomplished by the immunoblotting experiment, whereby the antibody directed toward the specific region of be...

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) versus magnesium sulfate to arrest preterm

Introduction: Considering the high incidence of preterm labor and its known complications, and that human myometrium contains receptors for human chronic gonadotropin (hCG) and that hCG can inhibit myometrial contractions on vitro, made me study treating effects of hCG on preterm labor. This clinical trial study was carried out to compare the effect of hCG, and magnesium sulfate (mgso4) on pre...

Screening method to evaluate point-of-care human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) devices for susceptibility to the hook effect by hCG β core fragment: evaluation of 11 devices.

BACKGROUND The predominant hCG variant in urine, hCG β core fragment (hCGβcf), has been demonstrated to cause false-negative results in qualitative point-of-care (POC) hCG devices. This is a major concern for healthcare professionals using POC pregnancy tests. We developed a screening method to evaluate qualitative POC hCG devices for their susceptibility to inhibition by hCGβcf. Using this met...

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) induction of apoptosis in breast cancer.

10658 Background: Apoptotic induction in cancer cells may improve the efficacy of local or systemic therapy. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) injection directly into Kaposi's sarcoma or melanoma has been shown to increase the apoptotic index in these tumor types. The rapid induction of apoptosis in breast cancer immediately preceding local or systemic therapy may improve the response to thera...
